5 Tips for Minimalist Moving

When moving to a new place, many of us often think of getting a fresh start. However, this is not always that easy. You need to have a minimalist mindset if you really want to start fresh. Minimalist moving covers various aspects that allow you to feel refreshed and new when you finally enter your new apartment or house.

It might be difficult for you to identify where to begin and how you can genuinely apply minimalist ideas while moving. If you are confused about it, you have come to the right place. Here is a list of top 5 tips that will help you with the moving process.

1.    Create a Plan

The first step is to create a minimalist moving checklist. Since this can be overwhelming, you can take a few days to make a list. Assign at least one room every day and make a list of all the things you have in that space. Once you finish that, you will become aware of how much stuff you have been piling up in all the rooms around the house.

2.    Apply the 90/90 Rule

Once you have your minimalist moving checklist, you can now apply the 90/90 rule to every item you possess. For those who are unaware as to what this rule is, let us explain that first. The 90/90 rule states that you should get rid of anything you haven’t used in the past 90 days and probably not use it in the upcoming ones.

However, if you feel that the 90-day cap is too little for you, you can increase the timeframe a bit. If you think that you will not use an item for at least a year and you haven’t touched it in the past year, you absolutely need to let it go.

3.    Make Categories

Now that you have the list of items that you are not using and those you do not feel like keeping anymore, make categories. Anything that is broken and is beyond repair, throw it in the trash. After that, you can make boxes for the items that can be recycled, the ones that you need to donate, and products that you can sell for a reasonable amount. The extra cash will be helpful when moving. The significant thing here is to do all of this before moving as you would not want to unload all the unnecessary luggage in the new house.

4.    Big and Small Items

People often get confused about when it comes to minimalist moving is whether to get rid of small or big items. The answer is both! If you have a piece of furniture that is too old to be used or a product you bought but have no idea where to fit, you need to let it go. Similarly, if you have clothes or textbooks from high school still packed in bags resting in the storeroom, you do not have to take them to the new house. While this does not include items that hold sentimental value, you need to identify and be particular about what is too close to let go of and what you can live without.

5.    Learn to Leave Empty Spaces

Lastly, since you are moving to a new house, you will probably have to buy some new products. Even if you don’t, you need to learn that it is okay to leave some empty space in your wardrobe. You do not have to fill every empty space with one thing or the other.
